Grandpa’s Rawap

Under the grape arbor, Dilnaz listens to Grandpa’s rawap and finds her own place in the family’s music.

In the evening, Dilnaz heard music from the courtyard. Grandpa was playing the rawap under the grape arbor. She went and sat beside him. The sound of the rawap spread through the courtyard.

“Who gave you this rawap?” Dilnaz asked. “My father gave it to me. He taught me my first melody,” Grandpa said. He ran his hand gently along the wooden neck.

Grandpa played a slow melody. Dilnaz clapped along to the rhythm. At first she clapped too quickly and did not match the music. Grandpa smiled and said, “Listen carefully first, then clap along.”

This time Dilnaz listened carefully. Her clapping matched the rawap. Her mother came into the courtyard and sang a song. Her father listened and smiled.

When the music stopped, Dilnaz asked, “Will you teach me another melody tomorrow?” Grandpa happily agreed. To Dilnaz, this rawap was more than an instrument: it was a memory of learning together with her family.
