Pronunciation Guide

Uyghur uses a modified Arabic script with special characters for unique sounds:

Vowels:

  • ئا (a) - like in "father"
  • ئە (e) - like in "bed"
  • ئو (o) - like in "more"
  • ئۇ (u) - like in "put"

Special Vowels:

  • ئۆ (ö) - like German "ö"
  • ئۈ (ü) - like German "ü"
  • ې (é) - between "e" and "i"
  • ى (i) - like "ee" in "see", but shorter

Special Consonants:

  • غ (gh) - guttural "g" sound
  • ق (q) - deep "k" sound
  • ڭ (ng) - like in "sing"
  • ھ (h) - stronger than English "h"

How to pronounce ې (é)

ې is a closed “e”. Your tongue is higher than for ئە (e) but lower than for ى (i), much like French “é”. In Uyghur Latin script it is written é.

At the start of a word it is written ئې; inside a word it is written ې.

Compare ئە (e), ې (é) and ى (i)

  • ئە · ئەتىگەن · e · etigen — Morning
  • ې · ئېيىق · é · éyiq — Bear
  • ى · ئىت · i · it — Dog

Words with ې

  • ئېغىز · éghiz — Mouth
  • بېلىق · béliq — Fish
  • كېچە · kéche — Night
  • يېشىل · yéshil — Green

Learning Tips

Script Direction

Uyghur is written from right to left, like Arabic. This can be challenging for learners used to left-to-right scripts, but becomes natural with practice.

Letter Forms

Many Uyghur letters change their shape depending on their position in a word (beginning, middle, end, or isolated). Focus on recognizing these variations.

Practice Strategy

Begin by learning the basic shapes of letters, then practice reading simple words. Use flashcards with the letters and example words to build recognition.
